What is Menstrual Problems ?

A period can be normal if there is a blood loss of 30-40 ml per month for up to eight days. Usually, bleeding lasts for five days. A period is heavy if the blood loss is 80 ml or more, although it can be hard to measure.

Causes of heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding include:

Puberty
Puberty
Vaginal Infections
Inflammation of the cervix
Fibroids

Types of menstrual disorders:

Causes and concern

Heavy bleeding (menorrhagia) includes prolonged menstrual periods or excessive bleeding. Absence of menstruation (amenorrhea). Primary amenorrhea is considered when a girl does not begin to menstruate by the age of 16. Secondary amenorrhea occurs when periods that were previously regular stop for at least 3 months. Light or infrequent menstruation (oligomenorrhea) refers to menstrual periods that occur more than 35 days apart. It usually is not a cause for concern, except if periods occur more than 3 months apart.

Treatments:

Tranexamic Acid Tablet

Treatment with tranexamic acid can reduce the heaviness of bleeding by almost half in most cases. However, the number of days of bleeding during a period is not reduced, and neither is period pain. You need to take a tablet 3–4 times a day for 3-5 days during each period. Tranexamic acid works by reducing the breakdown of blood clots in the uterus.

Anti-Inflammatory Painkillers

There are various types, and common brands are mefenamic acid or naproxen. These medicines reduce blood loss by about a quarter in most cases. They also ease period pain. You need to take the tablets for a few days during each period. They work by reducing the high level of prostaglandin in the lining of the uterus.

The Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill (COCP)

Treatment can reduce bleeding & ease period pain. Good option for those preferring alternative contraception. Can be used with anti-inflammatory painkillers for more severe symptoms. Great options available to manage menstrual cycles.

Norethisterone

Norethisterone is not commonly used as a primary treatment for heavy periods but rather as a secondary option if other treatments are ineffective, unsuitable, or not desired. It is taken from days 5–26 of the menstrual cycle but does not work as a form of contraception. While it may offer some relief, other treatment options are more effective. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine the best course of treatment for your needs.

(LNG-IUS)

Try LNG-IUS to relieve heavy and painful periods. It’s a small device that releases the levonorgestrel hormone into the uterus to regulate menstrual cycles. Noticeable results may take 3–6 months. It’s effective for many people. Consult your healthcare provider to learn more about it. Your comfort and well-being matter.

Other Medicines

GnRH analogues can aid in treating certain conditions but have side effects like weight gain, fatigue, mood changes, and hot flashes, which vary per patient. These are often used by specialists in hospitals and it’s essential to seek the advice of a healthcare provider who knows the medical history of the patient before deciding to pursue this treatment.
